Offroad Excavator Recovery: How to Prevent an Excavator from Tipping

Team Pro-Tow handles all types of equipment recovery, and this wasn’t the first time we flipped a tipped-over excavator back on its tracks. While there are dangers to heavy equipment toppling over like this, there are always ways to prevent it. We’ll get into that once we share how Pro-Tow handled this excavator recovery.

Offroad Excavator Recovery

On June 23, 2023, Pro-Tow responded to a call about an excavator that tipped over on its side in the middle of a construction site. It was rough terrain, but we got our HD Rotating Crane Style Wrecker into the area. Thankfully, the customer had build a rigging platform, which assisted us with our equipment recovery work.
We worked out the rigging calculations and got to work. First, we installed a six-point rigging system with a specialty chain and strap attachments. This system allowed Pro-Tow to successfully upright the excavator on the soft surface. Once we had it right side up, the customer could assess any damage, and we could return our equipment, file paperwork and clear the call.

Prevent Excavator Tipping

Accidents do happen, but sometimes excavator tipping can be prevented.

Proper Operation

First, operator training is vital to preventing equipment from tipping over. That means maintaining proper machine positioning (like keeping the heaviest side of the excavator facing uphill), using the right lifting and digging techniques, and swinging the boom with caution. If anything is out of balance, like an overloaded bucket or swinging the boom too quickly while it’s carrying a load, you can tip. Operators should use slow, controlled movements at all times.

Following Load Limits

This wasn’t necessarily the case in this excavator recovery, but you must always follow the manufacturer’s load limits. Most will provide a lifting chart for the machine so you can ensure that you never exceed its rated capacity. If you’re using attachments, like a grapple or hydraulic hammer, consider how they impact balance.

Pay Attention to Surroundings

Construction sites contain all sorts of hazards that can cause excavators to tip and require equipment recovery. Always review the surroundings before and during a job, looking for rocks, unstable or soft ground, pipes, etc. Make sure there are no workers in the excavator’s path.
